Former India Captain Joins Residential Rooftop Solar Startup as Investor and Brand Ambassador

Residential rooftop solar startup SolarSquare has announced that former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has invested in the company through his family office, Midas Deals, as part of its recently concluded $53 million Series C funding round. Along with becoming an investor, Dhoni will also serve as the company’s brand ambassador, strengthening SolarSquare’s efforts to accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar solutions across India.

The investment comes shortly after SolarSquare secured $53 million in Series C funding led by Lightspeed, with participation from Lowercarbon Capital, NGP Capital, Elevation Capital, and existing investors.

The company plans to utilize the fresh capital to expand into new markets, strengthen its technology platform, and make residential rooftop solar more accessible to homeowners across the country.

Why Is MS Dhoni Investing in SolarSquare?

Dhoni’s investment reflects the growing interest of prominent personalities in India’s clean energy and climate technology ecosystem.

By backing SolarSquare through Midas Deals, his family office, Dhoni is supporting a startup focused on increasing the adoption of renewable energy at the household level.

In addition to his investment, Dhoni’s appointment as the company’s brand ambassador is expected to enhance SolarSquare’s visibility and help build greater consumer awareness around rooftop solar installations.

With India’s push towards clean energy and energy independence, rooftop solar has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments in the renewable energy sector.

What Does SolarSquare Do?

Founded by Shreya Mishra and Nikhil Nahar, SolarSquare provides end-to-end residential rooftop solar solutions for homeowners.

Its offerings include:

  • Solar system consultation
  • Design and installation
  • Financing assistance
  • Performance monitoring
  • After-sales service and maintenance

The company aims to simplify the entire rooftop solar adoption process, enabling homeowners to switch to clean energy without managing multiple service providers.

According to SolarSquare, it has already installed rooftop solar systems in more than 50,000 homes across 29 cities in India.

Its business model focuses exclusively on the residential segment, a market that continues to witness increasing demand due to rising electricity costs and government support for renewable energy.

How Will SolarSquare Use the New Funding?

Following the completion of its Series C funding round, SolarSquare plans to significantly expand its operations.

The startup intends to enter 30 to 40 additional cities, taking its residential solar solutions to a much larger customer base across India.

The fresh capital will also be used to:

  • Strengthen its technology platform.
  • Expand financing options for homeowners.
  • Improve customer service infrastructure.
  • Scale operations to meet growing demand.

By investing in technology and financing, the company aims to make rooftop solar installations more affordable and accessible for middle-class households.

India’s Residential Solar Market Is Growing Rapidly

India has been actively promoting renewable energy through policy initiatives, subsidies, and incentives aimed at increasing rooftop solar adoption.

Residential rooftop solar offers homeowners long-term savings on electricity bills while contributing to cleaner energy generation and lower carbon emissions.

However, despite significant policy support, residential rooftop solar penetration remains relatively low compared to its overall market potential.

Startups like SolarSquare are working to bridge this gap by simplifying installation, providing financing, and offering end-to-end customer support.

As electricity demand continues to rise, distributed solar energy is expected to play a critical role in India’s clean energy transition.

What Does This Mean for SolarSquare?

The combination of fresh capital from leading venture investors and the strategic backing of MS Dhoni provides SolarSquare with both financial resources and strong brand recognition.

Dhoni’s popularity and credibility are expected to strengthen consumer trust, particularly among homeowners considering rooftop solar for the first time.

At the same time, the company’s expansion into dozens of new cities positions it to capture a larger share of India’s rapidly growing residential solar market.

With over 50,000 rooftop installations already completed, a robust technology platform, and renewed investor confidence, SolarSquare is well-positioned to scale its operations and contribute to India’s renewable energy ambitions.

As the country accelerates its transition towards sustainable energy, companies like SolarSquare are expected to play an increasingly important role in making clean energy accessible to millions of households.
