Former Oyo Executive to Lead Commercial Operations as Quick Commerce Platform Strengthens Leadership Team
Quick commerce platform Swiggy Instamart has appointed Gautam Swaroop as its new Chief Business Officer (CBO), reinforcing its leadership team as competition intensifies in India’s fast-growing quick commerce market. The appointment comes just a week after former CBO Hari Kumar resigned and follows the recent departure of Chief Operating Officer (COO) Ankit Jain.
In his new role, Swaroop will oversee Instamart’s commercial operations, including customer growth, category management, brand partnerships, and business expansion. His appointment signals Swiggy Instamart’s focus on strengthening its leadership as it continues expanding its presence across India.
The company is currently one of the country’s leading quick commerce platforms, operating in more than 131 cities through a network of 1,143 dark stores and serving 13.3 million average monthly transacting users.
What Will Gautam Swaroop Lead at Instamart?
As Chief Business Officer, Gautam Swaroop will be responsible for driving Instamart’s commercial strategy across multiple business functions.
His responsibilities include accelerating customer acquisition, expanding product categories, strengthening relationships with consumer brands, improving category performance, and identifying new business opportunities.
The role will also involve supporting the platform’s expansion strategy as Swiggy continues investing in its quick commerce business to compete with players such as Blinkit, Zepto, Flipkart Minutes, and BigBasket Now.
Swaroop’s appointment comes at a critical stage for Instamart as the company broadens its assortment across grocery, FMCG, electronics, personal care, and other high demand categories.
Who Is Gautam Swaroop?
Gautam Swaroop brings more than 20 years of leadership experience spanning consulting, pharmaceuticals, hospitality, and technology.
He began his professional career at McKinsey & Company, where he spent nearly a decade advising businesses on strategy, operations, and organizational transformation.
He later joined Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, where he played an important role in scaling the pharmaceutical company’s emerging markets business from $37 million to $190 million in revenue.
Most recently, Swaroop served as the Chief Executive Officer of Oyo’s International Business, leading operations across key global markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, China, and Latin America.
During his tenure, he helped drive operational improvements and guided Oyo’s international business toward profitability.
His diverse cross-industry experience is expected to strengthen Instamart’s commercial execution as the company enters its next phase of growth.
Leadership Changes at Swiggy Instamart
Swaroop’s appointment follows a series of senior management changes within the company.
Last week, Hari Kumar, who served as Instamart’s Chief Business Officer, resigned from the company.
Around the same period, Chief Operating Officer Ankit Jain also stepped down, marking two significant leadership exits within a short span.
To strengthen its executive team, Instamart has simultaneously announced several senior appointments beyond Swaroop.
The company has appointed Srikar Adavi as Vice President Ad Monetization and Hardeep Kaur as Associate Vice President – Category (FMCG), among other leadership hires.
The appointments reflect the company’s strategy of building a stronger management team to support long-term business expansion.
Swiggy Bets Big on Quick Commerce Growth
India’s quick commerce industry has witnessed rapid growth over the past few years, driven by increasing consumer demand for ultra fast deliveries.
Swiggy Instamart has significantly expanded its operations, now serving customers across more than 131 cities through a network of over 1,143 dark stores.
The platform currently reports 13.3 million average monthly transacting users, making it one of the largest players in the segment.
As competition continues to intensify, companies are focusing on expanding product categories, improving delivery efficiency, strengthening brand partnerships, and increasing customer retention.
Leadership with deep operational and commercial expertise has therefore become increasingly important for sustaining growth in the highly competitive market.
Looking Ahead
Commenting on his appointment, Gautam Swaroop said he looks forward to working closely with teams across the organization to drive business growth, strengthen consumer and partner experiences, and create long-term value as Instamart scales its operations.
Swiggy Chief Human Resources Officer Girish Menon said the platform is entering an important stage of expansion by increasing its assortment across categories and deepening partnerships with leading brands.
He added that Swaroop’s experience in scaling businesses across multiple industries would help strengthen Instamart’s leadership as it continues delivering greater convenience to consumers.
With an expanded leadership team, a rapidly growing customer base, and continued investments in operations and product assortment, Swiggy Instamart is positioning itself to strengthen its presence in India’s evolving quick commerce landscape.
