Accel, Premji Invest Back Bengaluru-Based Biotech Startup
Biotechnology startup Zumutor Biologics has raised $7.3 million in a Pre-Series B funding round from existing investors Accel and Bharat Innovation Fund, alongside participation from new investors Premji Invest, Ashish Kacholia and Raj Dandu Family Office.
The funding will support the company’s ongoing efforts to develop next-generation cancer therapies and accelerate the clinical advancement of its lead immunotherapy candidate.
The investment also reflects growing investor confidence in India’s emerging biotechnology sector, particularly startups developing innovative therapies with global commercial potential.
Funds To Support Clinical Trials Of Lead Drug Candidate
According to the company, the newly raised capital will be used to complete the ongoing US FDA Phase 1 clinical trial of its lead drug candidate, ZM008.
The proceeds will also support Phase 1B expansion cohorts and help initiate global Phase 2 clinical studies, including trials in India.
Founded by Kavitha Iyer Rodrigues, Zumutor focuses on immuno-oncology, a field of medicine that uses the body’s immune system to identify and eliminate cancer cells.
The company is building therapies designed to unlock the potential of innate immunity, an area that has attracted significant attention in global cancer research over the past decade.
ZM008 Positioned As First-In-Class NK Cell Therapy
Zumutor’s flagship program, ZM008, is described as a first-in-class Natural Killer (NK) cell checkpoint therapy.
The treatment is designed to enhance the activity of natural killer cells, a critical component of the immune system responsible for identifying and destroying abnormal or cancerous cells.
Unlike conventional therapies that directly target tumours, NK cell therapies aim to strengthen the body’s natural defence mechanisms, potentially improving treatment outcomes across multiple cancer types.
The company said ongoing Phase 1 studies have generated encouraging early clinical signals in selected hard-to-treat tumour categories, reinforcing confidence in the platform’s therapeutic potential.
Global Clinical Development Plans Underway
Beyond advancing current trials, Zumutor plans to conduct combination studies involving ZM008 across multiple cancer indications as part of its broader clinical development strategy.
The company operates across India and the United States and is increasingly positioning itself as a global biotechnology player focused on innovative oncology treatments.
Industry experts believe combination immunotherapy approaches could become a major growth area within cancer treatment, particularly as researchers seek more effective therapies for resistant and advanced-stage cancers.
Indian Biotech Sector Gains Global Recognition
The fundraising highlights the growing maturity of India’s biotechnology ecosystem, which is increasingly producing startups focused on original drug discovery and advanced therapeutic research.
While India has traditionally been known for generic pharmaceuticals and contract research, a new generation of biotech companies is now developing proprietary intellectual property aimed at addressing global healthcare challenges.
Analysts believe continued investment in oncology, immunotherapy and precision medicine could help Indian biotech startups build globally competitive healthcare innovations over the coming decade.
For Zumutor Biologics, the latest funding is expected to accelerate the development of ZM008 and strengthen its position within the rapidly growing global immuno-oncology market.
